What’s next for optometry? 👀 Dr. Bendert is keeping an eye on emerging research around red light therapy and the growing intersection of optometry and aesthetics. Check out her perspective below: When I think about what’s next for optometry, one area I’m especially interested in is the intersection of eye health, aesthetics and emerging technology. Over the next few years, I believe we’ll see more collaboration between optometrists and skincare professionals as new approaches to eye care and aesthetics continue to evolve. One area I’m watching closely is red light therapy. There is ongoing research exploring its potential applications for both eye and skin health, including the treatment of macular degeneration. We are learning that red light therapy can slow, and in some cases even reverse, macular drusen, while also supporting skin health and hair regrowth, depending on wavelengths used. I predict new devices will come to market with multiple functions, allowing use in both cosmesis and vision care. It’s an exciting time to be in optometry, and I’m proud to practice in the National Vision Doctor of Optometry network, where I have the opportunity to be part of an organization that’s invested in the future of our profession and expanding access to quality eye care.
