Every golfer wants to get better, but improvement starts with understanding where strokes are actually being gained and lost. That is why Strokes Gained has become one of the most important performance metrics in modern golf. Learn the fundamentals of Strokes Gained, how the system works, and how you can use it to make more informed decisions about your practice and equipment. Developed by Columbia Business School professor Mark Broadie, Strokes Gained has changed the way players, coaches and analysts evaluate performance. Instead of relying only on traditional statistics such as fairways hit, greens in regulation or putts per round, it measures the value of each shot against a chosen benchmark. The data can reveal which parts of your game are helping your score, where strokes are being lost and which areas deserve more attention during practice. A golfer might believe putting is the biggest weakness, only to find that approach shots, pitching or equipment are having a greater impact. Learn how the four Strokes Gained categories work, why traditional golf statistics can sometimes be misleading and how shot-level data can help you make better decisions about your practice and equipment. A first driver fitting can change what a player thinks is possible off the tee. Zach works with Titleist experts and @meandmygolf. to find the right club setup to fix some swing errors in this episode of Solving the Puzzle. Zach arrived with a driver pattern that made confidence hard to build. One swing could miss wide right. The next could turn over left. The ball launched high, but the flight was not giving him the distance or control he expected, and every tee shot depended on how much room the fairway offered. The surprising part was the fix. Lowering the loft seemed like the obvious answer for a ball flight that looked too high, but the fitting pointed in the opposite direction. With Zach hitting up on the ball more than 7 degrees, the right setup needed to give him permission to move differently without forcing a swing overhaul. Using the New Titleist GTS4 driver, the fitting team pairs a lower-spinning head with more loft to create a stronger launch window. That combination helps manage spin while still giving Zach enough launch to move the ball forward, free up his path, and deliver the club with more confidence. As the club begins to fit the motion, the swing starts to react. The attack angle comes down. The path gets closer to neutral. The ball flight becomes more controlled. Instead of steering away from the miss, Zach can start seeing a driver shot that carries farther and stays in play. More loft was not the compromise. It was the key that helped unlock a freer move, tighter dispersion, and the potential for nearly 30 more yards of carry.
