With so many incredible books coming out in 2026, it’s only appropriate to do a mid-year check-in with our booksellers to see what they’ve loved reading so far. What’s your favorite 2026 release?

Join us on September 22nd at Kaufman Music Center for a launch event with acclaimed comedian Taylor Tomlinson in celebration of her debut essay collection ACTUALLY, NEVERMIND! Each ticket includes a copy of the book. Buy your ticket now through the link in our bio. “One of the most acclaimed, in-demand superstars of comedy” (Jason Zinoman, The New York Times) Taylor Tomlinson explores all the things she’s changed her mind about, from the serious to the absurd, in her hilarious, heartfelt, and brilliant debut. As she approaches thirty-four—the same age her mother, Angela, was at her death—Tomlinson grapples with fear and ambition, identity and doubt, and all the ways her mind has changed since the day her mom died. In these sharply observed, uproariously funny, and moving original essays, Tomlinson leads readers through a tour of her brain and her shifting opinions about everything from love and relationships, mental health and therapy, religion and sex, food and body image, being the eldest daughter and the only woman in late-night TV, to ghosts, morning people, and more. With the same unflinching honesty that fuels her beloved stand-up specials, she captures the dizzying contradictions of adulthood in the modern world: wanting independence while craving reassurance, chasing self-improvement while resisting change, and finally learning that certainty can be overrated. “True wisdom,” writes Tomlinson, “is accepting how little you know, and real maturity is becoming as flexible as possible. (Emotionally, not physically. Real maturity also means needing to stretch way more).”

“Monstrilio ultimately asks us the questions: what does it mean to be your most authentic self? And what does it mean to fully accept another? What do we take away when we force conformity? What scars are left behind by the monsters we expect, and the ones that show up in the quiet and well meaning? Monstrilio reads more like literary fiction than your standard horror. It’s thoughtful, humorous, deliciously queer and deeply moving. One of my favorites in the past few years.” - Molly, Used Book Buyer Find Monstrilio—and many more staff picks—on our shelves and on our website. Link in bio.

August is Women in Translation Month and we are celebrating with our second annual installment of Read Around the City, where we plot books by women in the New York neighborhood where you are most likely to hear their original language on the streets. New York City is the most linguistically diverse city in the world with more than 700 documented linguistic communities. This is all the more remarkable when we consider that the only other places that host more living languages are Papua New Guinea, which is the size of California, and Indonesia with its 17,000 islands. There may be many global cities in an increasingly globalized world, but there’s no doubt that New York City is where the world’s connectivity comes alive. We strove to find books not only written by women but also translated by them too, though we made an exception here and there out of necessity or attachment. Translation is an art that can’t be replicated by AI because AI synthesizes general knowledge where translation requires specificity, cultural context, and lived experience. Translators are important because we, as humans, need more than ‘the gist’ of art in order to appreciate it, and we, as readers, will not be tricked by false inevitability into a life of bullet points and overviews. While making this list gets a little easier every year as consumer demand for works by women around the world expands, next year we hope to find books by women translated from Uzbek, Bukhori, Swahili, Thai, Tagalog, Garifuna, Macedonian (and more!) as we continue our vocational quest to represent as many of New York’s 700+ languages as our industry will allow. Find the full collection through the link in our bio. Let us know in the comments what books and neighborhoods we should add next year!

Pre-order your signed (or personalized) copy of WE THOUGHT THEY'D NEVER LEAVE by Tony Shalhoub and Josie Adams from @strandbookstore. Link in bio... and yes, they ship! -- "A treasure for foodies, theatergoers, film buffs, Wisconsinites, and everyone else." — @kirkus_reviews (starred review) "Tony Shalhoub's talent knows no bounds. His writing is as witty, warm, and charming as he is.” — @stanleytucci, NYT bestselling author of TASTE and WHAT I ATE IN ONE YEAR “Tony is a longtime friend, and while reading his and Josie's wonderful book, I couldn't help but be bothered that he's never invited me to dinner.” — @sethmeyers “This is my kind of book—hilarious and warm stories of family, surrounded by love and food! Tony and his daughter Josie have invited us to their big, beautiful table, and I might not be leaving.” — @phil.rosenthal, NYT bestselling author of SOMEBODY FEED PHIL THE BOOK and PHIL'S FAVORITES “In 2018 I spent three weeks in Paris watching the gentle man I knew as Tony Shalhoub become a food obsessed monster, with feral eyes, screaming about lunch. After this book, I understand. Food is his language, his history, and the terrifying trigger to his inner demon.” — Amy Sherman-Palladino , creator/showrunner of GILMORE GIRLS and THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL “A wonderfully affectionate story of actor Tony Shalhoub's love of family and food (not necessarily in that order) as reflected in his family's annual gatherings in Door County, Wisconsin. Witty, charming and deeply affecting, this is a book for the ages." — @keithmcnallynyc, NYT bestselling author of I REGRET ALMOST EVERYTHING "A tender ode to the ties that bind." — @publisherswkly
