FacebookWhat we measure in the lab doesn’t always reflect what happens in the field, especially under the heat and intensity of the Tour de France Femmes. With riders losing large amounts of fluid and sodium at high sweat rates, Dr. Allen Lim adjusted their bottles to help maintain plasma volume, blood flow, oxygen delivery, and the body’s ability to remove heat. For some riders, that meant start bottles with 80 grams of carbohydrate and 3,500 milligrams of sodium per liter, based on their individual needs and what we were observing throughout the race. The biggest takeaway? As sweat volume increases, total sodium losses may look very different from what standard lab testing predicts. Test, learn, adjust. 🔁

we’re taking a recovery week. 😮💨 as athletes, we know recovery is part of the work. after a very full summer, we’re taking our own advice and giving the social team a few days to rest, reset + recharge. from august 12–19, things will be a little quieter around here while we step away from the feed. swipe through for a look at what we’ve been up to lately. then we’ll see you back here on august 19, rested and fueled 🙂↕️

What did sport science teach us at @letourfemmes 🧑🔬 It’s a difficult question to answer. At the Tour de France Femmes, there is no control group and no identical version of the race where the same athletes compete without the testing, data, and adjustments. What we do know is that we learned a lot. Throughout the Tour, Dr. Allen Lim and the team gathered information that challenged and expanded what we understand about hydration, dehydration, fueling, and performance, regardless of the final race results. Knowledge is an investment, just like training. Its impact may not always be visible immediately, but it compounds over time. Eventually, what we learn here can change what everyone at this race does in the future. The Tour may be over, but the learning continues. Back to the lab. 🥼🔬

Inside the @letourfemmes time trial with @aliactionjackson 🤩 Alison gives us a rundown of what the hours leading into today’s Stage 4 TT looked like, from a schedule planned down to the minute to a warm-up where every detail was already taken care of. To give her one less thing to think about, the staff handled everything from equipment and supplies to continually replacing cold towels throughout the warm-up! Next up, stage 5 💛

This is where the testing starts to change what goes into the bottle. 🩸🥤 The scale can tell us how much total water an athlete lost, but it cannot tell us where that water came from. Was it lost from inside the cells, or from the extracellular space that includes blood plasma? The fingertip blood samples help Allen and the team measure shifts in plasma volume and add another layer of context to the riders’ hydration data. Before Stage 3, three riders showed lower plasma volume. So Allen made an adjustment: a bottle with 20 grams of carbohydrate from Sport Hydration Drink Mix, brought up to a higher sodium concentration with Electrolyte Booster. Then the riders slowly drank it by thirst during the hour before the start. Follow along to see what the team learns and how those results shape the next adjustment. 💛
