Palantir bought $50.9 million in gold bars in 2021 to prepare for unexpected shocks. In 2023, the company sold every bar for $51.1 million. A comparable investment held through October 4, 2026 would be worth an estimated $118 million. Follow SD Bullion for more gold and silver stories.

Large gold discoveries have become much rarer. The latest tally records 29 major deposits discovered in 1995, but only nine across 2020 to 2025. The count covers deposits with at least 2 million ounces identified, including gold already mined. Recent counts can rise as more drilling reveals a deposit’s size.

How much higher can rates climb before legit market interventions must proceed at a persistent scale? The US government is currently spending a record 18.5% of its total revenue just to cover interest on its current debt. Another week of squirrelly spot price selloffs for the precious metals complex, mainly driven by continued higher Treasury yields and a firmer relative fiat US dollar index versus other competing fiat currencies. Silver and gold markets traded lower this week as bonds continued to sell off and the relative fiat US dollar strength continued. Spot silver closed the week down at $60.18 oz bid. Spot gold finished the week down at $4138 oz bid. The spot gold-silver ratio ended the week up at 68. Respectively, both gold and silver are trading well below their 200-day moving averages. In secular bullion bull markets, these are the times to add to positions on price weakness. I have been continuing to buy silver and platinum bullion recently on price weakness. One ounce of gold cost about 116 hours of average U.S. private-sector pay in December 2025. That is almost three 40-hour workweeks, before taxes, rent, groceries, or a single bill. The calculation uses the monthly average gold price and excludes retail premiums.

In 1933, Americans were required to exchange most gold coins and bars for cash at $20.67 an ounce, with some exceptions. Restrictions on private gold ownership lasted 41 years, ending December 31, 1974. By then, gold traded near $200 an ounce. Someone who surrendered 10 ounces received $206.70. Governments can issue more debt. They cannot print gold. Physical bullion has no borrower and no promise of repayment. You own the metal itself.

The 10-year Treasury yield rose above 5.2% today, its highest level since 2007. That is the interest rate the U.S. government pays to borrow for 10 years. Mortgage and car loan rates tend to follow it, so when it climbs, borrowing gets more expensive. It has risen roughly half a percentage point since late August. Gold pays no interest, so higher yields give it more competition from bonds.

Strong investment demand pushed Chinese gold prices above the global benchmark, encouraging imports, according to Kitco. The dollar figure estimates the gold’s value at September 22 prices, not what China paid.

Every month the University of Michigan asks Americans how their money is doing. The answers get turned into a score. Feeling better pushes the score up, feeling worse pulls it down. September’s score is 47.8. In August it was 51.7. They have been asking since 1952. Only one month has ever scored lower, and that was May.
