September 30 | National Day for Truth & Reconciliation Today is a day to honour the children who never returned home from residential and boarding schools. It is a day to honour Survivors, their families and communities, and the generations who continue to carry this history. It’s a day to remember the truth and reflect on what reconciliation asks of each of us. Here are 5 Ways YOU can Take Action: 1) Wear Orange Wearing orange is a simple way to show solidarity, start a conversation and remember that Every Child Matters. Know what the colour represents, and the message and history is carries. 2) Support Local Movements & Events Find a local gathering, healing walk, ceremony or event and show up. Listen, learn and make space for Indigenous voices and leadership. Community has healing power. 3) Read The 94 Calls to Action Published by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada in 2015, the 94 Calls to Action outline concrete steps toward reconciliation. More than a decade later, only a small portion have been completed. Consider what action you can take. 4) Listen. Read. Learn. There is no shortage of books, films, podcasts, Survivor testimonies and educational resources for all ages. Seek out Indigenous authors, educators, artists and storytellers. 5) Carry It Forward September 30 is one day. Reconciliation is not. Teach the next generation to respect one another, respect Elders and understand the history that brought us here. Keep the conversation going. Keep learning. Keep showing up. “When I was thinking about the name for this collection, the word that really stuck out to me was ‘Mikwendam’, and that word means: To Find In Thought.” For Jaymie Campbell (Jaymie Campbell), beadwork creates space for deep thought and reflection.
