🌷Planting Tulip & Narcissus (Daffodil) Bulbs 💐 When planting tulips for cut flower use, we treat them as an annual flower, so we plant them very densely in a deep trench. We typically dig 20–24 inches wide and 8–10 inches deep. Because we are only growing them as annuals, we want to use space as efficiently as possible. Place the bulbs very close together until they are nearly touching one another. With daffodils, we typically leave 2–4 inches between bulbs in the bed for cut flower use. This spacing will hopefully give the bulbs enough room to expand over the next few years, allowing for several seasons of harvests. When you’re done planting, it is time to cover your bulbs with soil. We typically cover tulips and daffodil bulbs with 6–8 inches of soil. Harvest indicators for winter squash vary by type. Here are some basics: ✅Spaghetti: harvest when fruits have developed a deep yellow color. ✅Acorn: harvest when fruits have a dark-orange “ground spot.” ✅Delicata & Dumpling: harvest when fruits have a dark-orange “ground spot.” ✅Hubbard, Kabocha, and Buttercup: dry, corky stems are a good indication of fruit maturity. ✅Butternut: harvest when fruits have developed a uniform tan color (an exception is ‘Honeynut,’ which will continue to ripen and color-up in storage). What about curing? Curing requirements vary by type and variety. Farm Friday: Polar Bear Grow-Out Before we make a new lot of seed available to you, we plant a sample on our Research Farm to verify that the plants and fruit look and perform as expected, from sowing through harvest (e.g., correct shape, size, color, vine length, etc.). For this recent lot of Polar Bear, a cultivar from our breeding program, the grow-out passed with flying colors: nothing but wonderfully white, extra-large pumpkins! 𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺: 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼-𝗧𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 We sowed this buckwheat cover crop in one of our fallow fields during the summer as a fast-growing green manure. We'll terminate it with a roller crimper before seed forms, which keeps the crop residue intact and protects the soil. Next, we'll drill our winter rye directly into it, leaving the soil undisturbed. Buckwheat is widely grown as a grain crop, bee pasture, soil-improving cover crop, and as wildlife cover. Its rapid, dense growth chokes out weeds, and it is great for crop-free fields in rotation with vegetables. Buckwheat is also often grown to attract beneficial insects and as pasture for honey bees.
