GR MONSTER HIKING PACK + DAY RUCK 13 Years in Development. Monster’s Final Approval. This past Friday, we were finally ready to sign off on a rucksack that we’ve been working on for 13 years, aka Monster’s whole life. He was sitting under the table on his bed at Scars, never far from the action (or Christian’s treat bags). We approved the final sample, celebrated a quiet win, and moved onto the next task. That’s when Angel came around the corner and said Monster had fallen on his way outside and couldn’t get back up. No matter how ready you are, it always comes too soon. Monster passed the next day at home, surrounded by our family and all the love in our hearts. Monster loved serving as your President of GORUCK Nation and he loved you all with his whole heart. Thank you for loving him back with yours. Next steps are never easy and the grief comes in waves — but there are no coincidences in the universe. The rucksack we approved together on the last full day of his life is now and forever called GR MONSTER. Emily and I both used it for a week on the John Muir Trail in California, and when we were going to see Oasis in Scotland last summer, I used it there, too, all around Edinburgh. It slimmed down enough that they even let me wear it in the Scottish National Gallery of Art - surrounded by other works of beauty. It’s a dayruck, a hiking pack, you can strip it down to the essentials or add enough accessories to live out of it basically forever. It’s tough and beautiful, like Monster. This will be the first run, marked with a special internal label, and it’s a pre-order. The patch it comes with is exclusive to the GR MONSTER, and at a deeply personal level, I’m always looking for more meaning out of the things in my life, or else they’re just things. The GR MONSTER is full of the spirit of the dog who served us all faithfully, with loyalty and above all love. MONSTER FOREVER 2013–2026 Our beloved Monster crossed the Rainbow Bridge this weekend, surrounded by our family at home. After taking a turn for the worse on Friday, we showered him with love, hugs, tears, and some of the world’s best beef. He especially appreciated the beef :) He didn’t want to be alone, and he wasn’t. Our family got one final trip to his favorite beach, with a perfect breeze and a perfect sunset. It was the best way to end the worst of days. He passed with salty, sandy paws and a full belly, as he would have wanted. We know how much he’ll miss us, and we’ll miss him more. He loved serving as your President of GORUCK Nation and he loved you all with his whole heart. Thank you all, so much, for loving him back with yours. I saw a headline this week that said “It’s the Summer of Purse Guys.” I want to inject some reality into your week: No, it’s not. We’re proudly not purse guys. Purses aren’t versatile, indestructible, or cool looking. And those things matter, when you’re a guy with a to-do list and stuff to carry. Purses don’t like sweat, and we love sweat. Purses can’t protect a laptop and carry 40+ lbs. Purses can’t carry everything you need for a week-long trip. 95 Pounds - age 57, August10, 2026, 3:44 pm Over the last four months I’ve increased my @goruck Rucker weight from 45 to 75 pounds and it’s been great for my strength and cardio while giving my knees time to recover from injuries I’ve sustained over the last 4 years. On the days I don’t train with weights, I like to add weight to the Rucker to make up for it, so today I tried something I haven’t done in a long time and brought it up to 95 pounds. Getting it on was harder than I expected, and the extra 20 pounds put my arms to sleep until the ruck straps settled and my shoulders got used to it. A walk that I can easily do in 30 minutes with 75 pounds took 38 minutes with 95, and when I got back I had to rinse off with my dogs using the hose. I’m not in a rush to do that again anytime soon, but it puts into perspective the weights I normally walk with and allows me to walk longer or faster with them later. Since I got them six years ago, I’ve always considered walking my dogs without weight a waste of time unless there was something heavy on me. Today’s walk was definitely not a waste of time, and I felt relaxed and chill the rest of the day. It was better than weed. Aloha
