22 captured#WorldMosquitoDay commemorates Sir Ronald Ross's 1897 discovery that mosquitoes transmit malaria to humans—a breakthrough that reshaped public health. Today, it highlights the importance of science, surveillance, and prevention in the fight against mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and West Nile virus. By taking small steps such as removing standing water from your yard and using insect repellent, you can do your part to help protect your family and community. When selecting a mosquito repellent, consider the how long you’ll be outdoors, whether you’re going to an urban or wooded setting, and any alerts about viral outbreaks in your area. For low-risk situations, natural alternatives to DEET—like catnip oil—might be an option. Read more about the potential benefits of this feline favorite: http://spr.ly/6189B15tox

If you want to wish upon a shooting star, August is your best opportunity. Mid-month, the #PerseidsMeteorShower occurs; many astronomers and amateur stargazers consider it the best meteor shower of the year. Skywatchers will flock to viewing spots in pre-dawn hours to see a spectacular show of lights streaking through the Earth’s atmosphere. The Perseids often include fireballs, brighter bursts of light and color in the sky that linger longer than typical meteor streaks. The Perseids are the result of the Earth passing through debris left from the Swift-Tuttle comet. This debris collides with the Earth’s atmosphere and burns up, resulting in the colorful light show of meteors. Almost none of these meteors will make it to Earth’s surface, though, as they are smaller and more fragile than other types of meteors. When a meteor does make it to the ground, scientists seek it out to see what it can reveal about the history of the universe. Get out your telescopes for #AsteroidDay on June 30. Launched 10 years ago and co-founded by astrophysicist (and guitar player for Queen) Dr. Brian May, film director Grig Richters, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, and B612 Foundation President Danica Remy, Asteroid Day focuses on education and awareness about asteroids’ role in space. Asteroids are rocky objects greater than a meter wide that orbit the sun. They are related to meteoroids, which are much smaller space rocks—often part of an asteroid that has broken off. A meteoroid that enters the Earth’s atmosphere and burns up or falls to Earth becomes a meteorite. To find out more about what we can learn from meteorites, and by extension, asteroids, meteoroids, and the history of our solar system, read the article, “Cosmic Time Capsules: The Science Behind Meteorite Hunting” in Headline Discoveries: http://spr.ly/6181BDW5U9 #fisherscientific #science #asteroids #asteroidday #meteoroids #meteorites #headlinediscoveries

In the past, alchemists, astrologers, and philosophers postulated theories that centered man’s experience of the world, explaining that Earth was the center of the universe and seeking to turn base metals into gold. Another example: Humourism was the medical theory that health was derived from balancing the four humors, or vital bodily fluids: blood, bile, phlegm, and black bile. Originating in Ancient Egypt, for centuries it led physicians to attempt to cure disorders through bloodletting, leeching, or purging. Humourism held sway until the advent of cellular theory and microbiology in the 18th and 19th centuries. Eventually, chemists, physicians, geologists, mathematicians, and astronomers developed tools that helped us discover the real “magic” behind our bodies, celestial bodies and more. The word “scientist” was first used in 1834 by William Whewell to describe polymath Mary Somerville, to whom he did not want to apply the existing term “man of science”—understandably, since she was a Scottish woman who published many books exploring various scientific disciplines and how they were inter-related. Somerville’s work eventually became the basis for Cambridge University’s first science curriculum. #fisherscientific #science
