Someone bought a Capt. How would you spend it? Probably not exactly the way Stanley Pophal did. Since this is Common Tread and not Snow World, you probably wouldn't have blown the money on hundreds of vintage snowmobiles. But Pophal also had a thing for motorcycles, and his taste was just as specific there, too. Since you've likely never heard of this case, here's the short version. From 2019 to 2025, Pophal, of Wausau, Wisconsin, ran what was basically a Ponzi scheme. He promised investors 20% returns, according to the FBI, which he said he would make through investments in cryptocurrency, precious metals, artificial intelligence enterprises, and flipping real estate. He said he could ensure the returns because of his connections in the finance world and he promised to personally back investors' money with his own wealth. What I learned from 500 off-road miles on the BMW R 12 G/S (👉 link in @cyclegear bio) • I own and ride a motorcycle that I've had for over 40 years. That kind of intimacy with a bike will clearly reveal any bike's strengths, weaknesses and, if it has them, maddening faults. Of course, with 40 years to work on stuff, the maddening faults can usually be excised with a little cash and well informed turning of wrenches. Testing new motorcycles is different. Some new motorcycle product roll-outs organized by the manufacturers give the writer as little as 50 to 60 miles of regimented group riding to form an opinion. I don't know about you, but 60 miles isn't even enough for me to find out what all of the buttons do, much less come to an understanding of the bike. I've been interested in BMW's new R 12 G/S — part of the company's Heritage line — since it was first announced over a year ago. This new G/S is intended to recall the original, the 1981 R80 G/S, which was the world's first street motorcycle with off-road capability. Dealers call for change in motorcycle pricing system nobody likes (👉 link in @cyclegear bio) • It's a common complaint among motorcyclists. You see a price listed on a manufacturer's website for a new bike you'd like to buy, you go to a dealer, and then you find out the actual price is higher because of setup and destination fees. Seems nobody likes that. As it turns out, dealers dislike it, too. And with the government potentially getting involved, the stakes are getting higher. If you've shopped for a new motorcycle you know the drill, and we see the complaints mentioned in reader comments here on Common Tread articles. Typically, the ire is aimed at the dealers, as riders grumble about "dealer add-on fees." Many dealers are tired of taking the blame for an industry practice they didn't create, and that's why one of the top priorities of the National Powersports Dealer Association (NPDA) is an initiative to get the pricing system changed. To be clear, we're not talking about "market adjustment" fees or other markups that some dealers try to add to the price during times when certain models are scarce or in big demand. Nor are we talking about extended warranties, roadside assistance plans, additional insurance, and other add-ons that some dealers push. We're talking about the destination and setup fees that are part of virtually every purchase of a new motorcycle. The former is the mandatory charge the dealer pays the manufacturer to cover shipping the motorcycle to the dealer. It's not included in the MSRP the manufacturer lists on the website, but the dealer has no choice but to pay it, so naturally the dealer wants to recover that cost by passing it on to the consumer.
