These lies are easy to believe because they're also easy to use as an excuse to avoid the harder, slower, or more uncomfortable choices. Distance with your kid isn't permanent. It can feel that way some days, but relationships shift. A little consistency, a little patience, and showing up even when it's not reciprocated yet can rebuild what feels lost. Monitoring and building trust aren't opposites either. You can know what's happening in your kid's online world and still give them room to grow, make mistakes, and build independence. One doesn't cancel out the other (especially when you’re using Bark!). Friendships can absolutely thrive without social media. Some of the strongest bonds kids build happen in person, with time and shared experiences. None of it happens overnight. But ALL of it is still possible!

Adam Rodakowski is the Director of Foster Care at Greater Oregon Behavioral Health, where he leads a treatment foster care program serving 40 to 50 youth after nearly a decade in Oregon's child welfare system. He shares the two warning signs that forced his team to act. One was a teen who kept showing up with brand-new phones within days of losing one. The other was a known adult trying to groom a young person with a history of being trafficked. You'll hear why restricting devices led to runaways and broken trust, how his program rolled out Bark Phones and smartwatches to every youth after checking with the Oregon Department of Justice, and how early alerts about bullying turned potential crises into calm conversations. Even a follower you think you can trust can end up being someone who saves and shares more than you'd ever expect. And with AI now able to take an ordinary, fully clothed photo and turn it into something else entirely, the risks aren't hypothetical anymore. YOU are your child's first line of defense when it comes to their privacy. If your kid brought home a school laptop or Chromebook this fall, here's something a lot of parents don't realize until later: it's probably not as locked down at home as it looks. Most school-issued laptops sit behind real safeguards at school: web filters, device management, usage policies. But a lot of that protection lives on the school's network, not the device itself. Once the Chromebook leaves school Wi-Fi and joins yours, some of those guardrails stay behind. And because the school owns the device, parents usually can't install their own controls the way they could on a phone they bought. This can leave parents feeling helpless to protect their child online.
